The Xcel Renewable Energy Trust Program | Solar Funding for Non-Profits

The Xcel Renewable Energy Trust

The Xcel Renewable Energy Trust Program: A conscientious source of solar project funding for non-profits and public organizations in Colorado

What exactly is the Xcel Renewable Energy Trust (RET)?

The Xcel Renewable Energy Trust (RET) is a solar funding program which collects and distributes funds to support the construction of more solar energy projects and photovoltaic systems for organizations throughout the state of Colorado.

Though the program is often overlooked, Xcel has awarded a total of 30 grants in the past 11 years with average award amounts between $15,000 and $40,000 to each qualifying organization.

Who can apply?

Solar Grant Money for Non Profits

Any non-profit or other public organization in Colorado looking to invest in, or is otherwise working towards clean, renewable energy products (such as a solar PV system) may apply.

Previous RET grant recipients include:

  • Colorado Energy Science Center
  • The Pueblo (Colorado) Zoo
  • University of Colorado Foundation
  • Boulder Shelter for the Homeless
  • Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District

What does the Xcel RET offer?

  • Funding for the construction of renewable energy projects - including solar projects
  • Average award amounts vary between $15,000 - $40,000.
  • Organizations that receive a grant from the Renewable Energy Trust also remain eligible to participate in Xcel's Solar* Rewards program - another Xcel funding program specifically tailored to support those interested in offsetting their energy costs with a solar system.
  • Donations sent to the RET are tax-deductible.

Where and how to apply:

A non-profit or other qualifying organization can apply by visiting Xcel's Renewable Energy Trust page, filling out the available RET grant application, and then submitting it to Xcel by e-mail.

  • Applications are due by April 15, August 15, or December 15 and will be reviewed by The Renewable Energy Trust Customer Advisory Panel.
  • Funds are limited, therefore, it is encouraged that non-profits apply for solar grants at the earliest date of the year instead of waiting until December. Depending upon the project and how genuine the RET believes the intentions of the non-profit are, a sizeable donation may be granted.
  • As a part of the project evaluation criteria, non-profits that apply for RET funds must be able to show how their project will increase public awareness about renewable energy and the Renewable Energy Trust.
